The Charleston Battery’s top goalscorer Romario Williams could be headed to the Gold Cup after being listed in the preliminary 40-man roster for the three week CONCACAF Championship tournament.
Williams, who scored goals #12 and 13 on the season in the Battery’s 6-1 drubbing of Toronto FC II on Saturday, and is up for USL Player of The Week, joins MLSers such as Portland Timbers’ Alvas Powell and Darren Mattocks, New England Revolution’s JeVaughn Watson, Philadelphia Union’s Andre Blake and former Battery striker and Williams’ lead goalscoring rival Dane Kelly in the preliminary roster.
Williams and Kelly aren’t the only players with USL ties included, with players from Tampa Bay Rowdies, Rochester Rhinos, New York Red Bulls II and Portland Timbers 2 also there.
It may be a bit bittersweet for Battery fans and Williams alike, who finds himself in great form as we get into the second half of the season, but the chance to represent your country is an honor for any player, and representing at a major tournament is something that not many players can say they’ve done.
The Gold Cup runs from July 7 to July 26, with the US playing Panama on July 8., while Jamaica kick things off against Curacao on July 9.
